Historical Context-the art or technique of dramatic composition or theatrical representation. In this sense English dramaturgy and French dramaturgie are both borrowed from German Dramaturgie, a word used by the German dramatist and critic Gotthold Lessing in an influential series of essays entitled Hamburgische Dramaturgie (“The Hamburg Dramaturgy”), published from 1767 to 1769. The word is from the Greek dramatourgía, “a dramatic composition” or “action of a play.”(http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/171026/dramaturgy#)

My Own Def.-in my oponion i think that a dramatug is basically the historical eyes for the production. they work very closly with the director and creative team to insure historal accuracy on any given aspect of the play. that is to say that the play will maintain it's original context, if it does not the dramaturg would help in putting it in to it's new "world".
